Australian Film Locations
Despite its remoteness, Australia is a popular film location because of the diversity of its geography and landscape. Even though it is an island nation, it is a large nation. During the floods a few years back, journalists described the extent of the flooding by writing it covered an area larger than France and Germany combined. The city of Brisbane’s flood waters were so deep Bull Sharks were seen swimming above the streets and between the buildings.
The Australian interior has sheep stations (ranches) that cover thousands of acres and have very few people working on them or even living near them. This helped inspire the “Babe” comic movie series. The theme for these movies was the adventures of a pig that thought it was a border collie in pig’s clothing. As can only happen in the movies, Babe ended up herding the sheep just like a dog.
The Outback area is so remote and desolate it was used for location of the “Mad Max” movies. The series was based on a futuristic Australia that had suffered the horrors of nuclear war and the breakdown of civilization that followed the destruction of Australia’s infrastructure, cities, towns and farming communities.
Australia has provided acting career starts for world famous stars. A few examples are Judy Davis, Nicole Kidman, Heath Ledger (RIP) and Russell Crowe. The outback also gave the world the Crocodile Dundee series starring Paul Hogan as a flamboyant crocodile hunter.
